The Humane Society of Marlboro County, SC is a non-profit, volunteer organization which assists the county in saving as many lives as possible from the new Marlboro County Animal Shelter which opened October 2015. This shelter is run by the county under the direction of the Shelter Director and ACO. Our small, rural county gets very few local adoptions so we move animals through rescue partnerships with groups around the country that can help place pets in loving homes. We are constantly on the lookout for new rescue partners so that we can save more animals in our community. Rescues can apply to pull from us by filling out an application.
The new Marlboro County Animal Shelter is located at 242 Ag Street in Bennettsville, SC.

A bit of background:
2010-2012
The Marlboro County Animal Shelter was an old jailhouse in need of major repair, with one county employee (ACO) and a prisoner dropped off every morning. In the summer of 2011, we were able to convince them to shut down their gas chambers, though they were still a high kill shelter. In September 2011, we gained a set of keys to access the facility after hours and were able to post videos and photos of the conditions there which have outraged the public. Due to the outcry, in September 2011, the county offered the Humane Society of Marlboro County a lease agreement.The shelter was closed for almost 1 year as repairs were made.
2012-2015
The county made much needed repairs such as replacing the roof, repairing the drainage, installing heating and fans and painting. The Humane Society of Marlboro County moved into the building in August of 2012 through September of 2015 and successfully ran the shelter saving over 1200 animals through rescue and adoptions. We ran the shelter for 3 years with only volunteers, donations and fundraisers as a limited intake shelter. The county did not employ an ACO during this time. At the beginning of 2015, due to community complaints that we didn’t have enough space to take in all the animals that residents wanted to surrender, the Marlboro County Council decided to renovate a new, bigger building in town and re-open the Marlboro County Animal Shelter as an open intake shelter. They hired a Shelter Director/Animal Control Officer and asked us, the Humane Society, to still be involved in helping save lives.
October 2015
The Humane Society of Marlboro County and the Marlboro County government are dedicated to the humane treatment of all animals that enter the shelter and we will continue to ensure that animals are well cared for. Unfortunately, due to the pet overpopulation in Marlboro County and residents not taking responsibility in spaying/neutering their pets, all animals now have only 30 days upon entering the new shelter. The Humane Society has a goal of saving every adoptable animal through rescue, adoption or foster homes. We can only do this with the community’s help. The recent video posted on You Tube is creating a lot of questions about how people can help. I’ve encouraged them to contact you directly via your website. Some people even mentioned calling PETA. I asked them NOT to do this. Maybe y’all need to post something to clarify the significance of how the newly formed Humane Society WILL work to improve conditions for these animals. Thank you so much for your concern. Obviously, as stated above the shelter in the video is not the Humane Society’s, it is the Marlboro County Shelter. We have absolutely no control over it despite the fact that we have been battling for change for months. If anything, we have less access to it now than before we tried to make a change. We have done our best to pull as many animals as possible from it for rescue. We have met with County Council numerous times and have had the National Humane Society try to help us in our efforts. Currently, the county shelter in question has stopped taking in animals unless they are a danger to the public. So it is not a question of how we WILL work to improve conditions but how we HAVE BEEN working relentlessly. Again, we are not in control of this facility, the county is.
